Our Siberian Cats As Pets

Siberians are intelligent, playful, affectionate, and loyal - leading many to describe their character as dog-like. The Siberian is one of the only long haired cats that are hyopallergenic and unlike hairless cats actually produce less of the allergy inducing secretion that affects people with pet allergies.

They make excellent pets! They will greet their humans at the door, enjoy the outdoors and some even enjoy playing in water. They learn quickly, and are generally well behaved. Many will answer to their name and greatly enjoy the company of humans.

About the Siberian Cat Breed

The Siberian is Russia’s native cat and has been recorded as far back as 1000 AD.  Known to be an exceptionally high jumper, the Siberian is a strong and powerfully built cat, with well proportioned characteristics. They are densley built cats, being shorter and stockier than Maine Coon cats and Norwegian Forest Cats, even though they can attain approximately the same weight.

Siberians typically mature more slowly, taking up to 5 years to reach full size. Adult males are generally larger at 15-20 pounds than the females at 10-15 pounds. Some think this long childhood is why the Siberian cat is so playful and fun loving.

The overall appearance is one of strength and force with an excellent physical condition and alertness, but with a sweet facial expression. Looking at a Siberian cat, the general impression is one of roundness.

Factoid: Russian president Dmitry Medvedev and his wife own a type of Siberian cat, a Neva Masquerade male cat named Dorofey. Dorofey used to fight with a cat belonging to Mikhail Gorbachev—who was Medvedev's neighbor—so the Medvedevs had to have Dorofey neutered. (wikipedia)

Cat Allergy Info

The "Cat Allergen" is called FEL D1. This allergen is extremely potent. Secretions from the glands of the skin are the primary source of FEL D1, but it is also deposited on the fur through the saliva when the cats clean themselves. Eventually the allergen flakes off and becomes airborne to trigger the symptoms that characterize allergies to cats. The Siberian Cat produces a reduced level of FEL D1, due to a protein sequence missing from their DNA. Any cross-breeding re-introduces that protein and ALL subsequent generations are no longer Allergen-Free. Recent studies from American breeders are indicating most of the Siberian cats are producing lower levels of this Protein but some people are still having reactions.
